Meet Mickey

“I know that the people at Restore really mean it when they say they want me to do well. I’d encourage people to trust the process and engage with the support on offer, because I know from my own experience, it really helps.”

What led you to Restore?

I  moved into Restore in 2023 and stayed with them for a year. I’d just come out of  along term relationship and was on a recovery journey from alcohol addiction. I stayed with my Dad temporarily, but circumstances meant this was not a viable long-term solution, so I referred myself to the council and they put me in touch with Restore, who offered me a room.

What DID a typical day look like?

I was really lucky, because I got along well with my housemates. They became good friends and we’ve stayed in touch. I tried to engage with Restore social activities and got involved with a boxing club run by the Salvation Army. The structure and boundaries Restore put in place helped me a lot, because it was completely different to the chaotic lifestyle I had when I was drinking.

What DOES a typical day look like?

Whilst I was living at Restore I started a counselling qualification, so that I could use my experiences to support other people on their journey. I’m currently working towards my level four counselling certificate and I lead a peer-support group for Restore residents.

What has your experience been with Restore so far?

It’s been really good. They’re here to help you get back on your feet. Even though they are a Christian organisation, they don’t push that on you. I know that the people at Restore really mean it when they say they want me to do well. I’d encourage people to trust the process and engage with the support on offer, because I know from my own experience, it really helps.

If it wasn't for Restore, where do you think you'd be now?

Who knows? I like to think I’d have continued on my recovery journey without the support, but Restore gives you that security of being accountable to someone.

What are your hopes for the future?

I will get my level four qualification, over the next two years. I’m also involved with a new boxing gym that’s being built between the Salvation Army and Choc and Co., and I want to help get sessions there up and running, but more on the counselling side for people who need it; I’m not there to be just a boxing trainer.

If you could say anything to someone thinking of donating to Restore, what would it be?

I could probably talk for hours on that! I feel quite strongly about Restore, it’s been positive, all the way through. They’re good people, trying to help people progress. You can rest assured that Restore will act for the good of their residents.
